Late for the Train Coffee: Flagstaff, AZ

Image result for owner of late for the train

Late for the Train is a coffee house located in Flagstaff, AZ. My family and I went to the Fort Valley location, which appears to be a converted gas station. Pretty unique indeed. The owner; David Dobrick and his team are “dedicated to creating a mountain fresh difference by combining coffee sourced from unique soils, micro-climates, cultivars, and growers’ skills”. I am happy to be the beneficiary of this dedication:)

In addition to roasting their own beans, Late for the train has a wide variety of  coffee and tea beverages, and food offerings.  Which includes locally sourced cookies, pastries and sandwiches. We shared chocolate chip cookies, zucchini bread and a chocolate danish.  All were really good.

My husband had the COCONINO MOCHA, which is an iced beverage made with their signature cold brew and homemade chocolate sauce.  I had a half sweet, iced Black and White with an extra shot of espresso. Both where really good but my favorite was the Black and White. In fact, it was the best one I have had!!

If you are in the area, be sure to give this place a try (www.lateforthetrain.com).  It is the perfect midway point from the Grand Canyon to Phoenix.

The Drunken Monkey~Orlando Florida

The Drunken Monkey is located in the “Milk District” on Bumby Avenue in Orlando Florida. It has to be one of the most unique coffee houses I have visited.  Some people describe it as hipster but I call it “uniquely eclectic.” You will find local art and a variety of comfortable places to sit but no one piece of furniture matches! LOL! They also have a drive thru, which is pretty cool too.

Always a plus, the coffee is roasted in house and they only serve fair-trade, organic or rain forest alliance beans. In addition to coffee, The Drunken Monkey serves tea, smoothies, iced and frozen drinks. They also offer an assorted variety of vegetarian sandwiches, soups, quiches and pastries. I enjoyed the Iced Mocha and my husband had the Iced Caramel Latte. Both were really good. We also had the breakfast burritos, Anzac Cookie (banana, peanut butter and chocolate), snicker doodle and chocolate chip cookies.  The Anzac was by far a favorite. Delish!!! The staff and baristas were very professional and accommodating.

If you are a coffee connoisseur and find yourself in Orlando Florida’s Milk District, give them a visit. You will be pleasantly surprised and happy you did!

Compass Coffee- Washington, DC

2015-07-03 19.51.37

Today my family and I visited Compass Coffee in the historic Shaw neighborhood in Washington, DC. It is clear that the proprietors of this establishment are serious about making good coffee. One distinguishing hint is that they roast their beans on-site in “The Lab”. Another good hint is that they choose their beans from various importers at the peak of freshness! This can only result into one thing…..”a real good cup of coffee!” How impressive is that???

Great customer service and a really good cup of coffee is what we received at C.C.! I had the Nutella Mocha- Iced and slightly sweetened. I seriously almost did a small dance when I took the first sip! Whoa, was it good. My husband had his new favorite, Nitro-slightly sweetened with caramel syrup. It had a very rich but smooth taste. We also had assorted cookies. My daughters said they were amazing:) Other interesting menu items are coffee cola, assorted teas and sandwiches.

If you live in or around DC or find yourself visiting, check out Compass Coffee (www.compasscoffee.com) where they are doing it good and right.

Coffee Love and Happy 4th of July,

Alicia

Avalon International Breads~ The Sweet Spot in Mid- Town~Detroit Michigan

Avalon has become one of my favorite places to visit in Detroit. It is a great meeting place with a rustic, but welcoming atmosphere.  They have the best brewed coffee. The Latte is the creamiest you will find in Mid Town Detroit.  Not only is it smooth and creamy, but its bold flavor paired with its creamy texture offers a perfect balance and finish.  Now, I am not typically one for iced coffee, but Oh My Goodness is their’s good? Yes!!!  It has a unique velvety texture that makes for an enjoyable treat on a hot summer day.

While I must admit that initially I went there for the coffee, their organic baked goods are amazing!  The Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookie is completely Insane! Other favorites are the, Cranny Granny Muffin, Brioche, Brownie, Peanut butter and the Molasses Cookies.

Again,  I love the rustic atmosphere and the personable service is unique. Avalon International Breads is a staple in Detroit’s Mid-Town and is a favorite among many.
